Bull Run Library Wiki

I really like how this wiki is done. The Bull Run Library makes their wiki very easy to navigate, clear and colorful. I think patrons of this library would find it a lot easier to use this wiki to learn about the resources and programs at their library than the website itself. It also allows patrons to be participants within the library community by editing and publishing their own input. The website can also be translated into 52 different languages!

I also like that their wiki has an interactive feel to it. In the adult program page, not only are the programs listed, but then they are displayed on a calendar.

The wiki itself is updated fairly regularly; every few days or so. The last post was about 4 days ago. To me, it appears to function as a main source of patrons to access information on their library. So, then I guess my question is, why use the wiki instead of a web page? Maybe because its more interactive?

Born To Run

If you all haven't read the wiki post by Deborah, this is what she is talking about. I actually know a lot of people who have read this book and said it was life changing. I have not read this book yet, but I definitely plan to read it!

This is a small clip of the author, Chris McDougall and a little background as to why he wrote the book

Running Log

Tuesday night: Ran for 20 minutes, walked 10. (Long day)
Tonight: Ran for 35 minutes-- a little over 3 miles

Man, running after work and school is tiring!

Help! Can't get my tag cloud to work

Last night, after class, I came home and starting making my Tag Cloud. When I finished, I was very pleased with my final project but for some reason I could not remember how to save it to the power point!! I was able add it as a gadget because I published it but can anyone help me ?? How can I save it ? I don't remember!

Oprah's at it again! RSS feeds

Last week in class, I have to admit that I was a little overwhelmed when learning about RSS feeds. I had an idea of what RSS feeds were but being that I am unfamiliar with computer terminology, I wasn't entirely confident. That was until I read the article "How to explain RSS the Oprah way"

RSS stands for "Really Simple Syndication" but I like Oprah's terminology better -- "Ready for Some Stories" Though the phrasing is really simple, I now have a visual of what RSS's are. Essentially -- they are the latest headlines within a website or a blog that are constantly changing and allows a reader to save time in searching a web page.

Thanks Oprah. You've done it again!

New sneakers!

As a runner, it is very important to have good sneakers. I believe that it is not only important to have one pair, but multiple! I have two pairs of sneakers right now that I run in and I really want to go out and buy some more! These are some of the sneakers that I want to get...
Nike Free Run 2

Nike LunarEclipse

Nike Free Run Plus

These sneakers can run anywhere from $90-$140. I own a pair of Nike Free and they are really light! I also like the Nike Air Max.

Especially if I plan to keep running, getting the best shoe is really important. I've been an athlete my whole life and with that I have a slouthe of feet/ankle/ shin issues. I wear special orthodox because I have no arch in my foot. (Yup.. that can actually have an effect on your body) Even though I like these sneakers seen above, I have been doing some research on what shoe best fits for me. At http://www.runnersworld.com/-- there is a section called Shoe Advisor that calculates what type of sneaker you should wear. Here is the website.

http://www.runnersworld.com/shoeadvisor

According to the Shoe Advisor, the best shoe for me would be....
1. Adidas Adistar Ride 3
2. Nike LunarElite 2
3. New Balance 1064
4. Asics Gel 3020

I guess when I go to the store next time I'll check them out

Anyone who runs have a preference?

6.3 miles

So yesterday, being that the weather was ABSOLUTELY beautiful,  I took the opportunity to run outside! I ran 6.3 miles in 62 minutes. (approximately 10 minute miles) This is pretty consistent with what I normally run but I'm hoping to drop my long distance time even shorter. Time will tell!

So while I was on my run, my mind began to wander. I find that when I am running I have such a clear head. I don't know why but I tend to think of so many things-- goals i want to accomplish, how I plan my day, who I  will be seeing or what I will be doing. Running is such a cathartic act for me and is a huge reason why I love doing it .

Anyways, hopefully everyone enjoyed this lovely weekend!

This has nothing to do with running but my professor showed this video in class and I absolutely loved it and wanted to share. Enjoy!

I hate the treadmill

In order to train properly, I sometimes have to do things that I don't want to do. Some days, I have absolutely no desire to run. But I force myself to get out there and do it. Another thing I hate doing is run on the treadmill. The fact the I am running and running and getting absolutely no where is so frustrating!! But, after an 8 hour work day, 2 hour class and dinner, I forced myself on the treadmill and ran 3 miles (in 30 minutes). It was the longest 30 minutes ever!! But, I persevered and did it and feel much better! Hopefully this weekend, I can run outside and do a long distant run. Soon it will be spring and I will be able to run more!

And so it begins...

After coming home from Florida last night, I was pleasantly surprised by the news that I was off from my job today due to the fact that it is a holiday (Presidents birthday). Now having a day off, I decided to take the opportunity to run outside and take my training more seriously. It was a bit cold outside but I prefer to run out doors than on a treadmill, especially if I plan to run for more than 30 minutes.

So my goal today was to run 4 miles in 38 minutes. I haven't been consistently running and I wanted to make my goal a bit.. realistic. So I put my i-pod on and started my watch. I mapped out my run and began running to the beat of the music. When I ran to my destination and stopped my watch,  I was beyond excited to see my time. My goal was to run 4 miles in 38 minutes but I ran 4.01 miles in 34:30 secs! That averages out to be a little less than 9 minute miles (around 8:50) I am beyond excited!

Hopefully the next time I run 4 miles I can take 1 minute off that time!

Computer malfunction!

As I have recently discovered, my blog posts from Thursday and Saturday of this past week were not properly published. I downloaded the blogger app for my phone and I guess I am still learning how to use it! This past weekend (Wednesday-Sunday) I was at Disney for work. I help coach a girls field hockey club team and they were being showcased for college recruitment. Needless to say, I was no where near a computer and my hotel charged $10 a night for Internet! So, being that I have a smart phone, I thought I was in the clear and could write some blogs on my phone. Guess I still have to figure it out! Many more posts will come!

the destination!

For my first post, I have decided to let you all know what the purpose of my blog will be. On May 5-6, 2012, I will be participating in the Long Island Marathon. For the next few weeks, I will record, document and tell the tale of my journey to the finish line.

.. Let see where it takes me.
