Podcasts
Growing up with technology, I was familiar with the term "podcast" but I never understood how it really worked. However, after learning about its function and usefulness, especially in the library setting, I am very intrgiued by there usefulness! When I use to sub in the schools, I actually observed a very cool history lesson in which students were broken up into 5 different groups and were required to listen to a podcast on a designated i-pod and answer questions. The lesson was very effective and the students appeared to understand the aim of that days lesson!
On an academic level, podcasts will probably be especially useful! With more online classes and lectures available, podcasts allow students to learn in a whole new light. The article titled "Librarian and Faculty Collaboration on video projects" discusses this very issue- How class classes and libraries would benefit more academically and functionality wise if they embrace the use to podcosts and vodcasts.
After reading the article, I realized that I knew a lot more about podcasts than I thought: Many fitness centers and wellness centers use podcasts and vodcasts for several educational purposes. I particularly like the idea of using Video assignments and Video exams- in which students would use have to either make a video to display what they have learned or watch a video observing someone or something that they needed to know. Ex. students who were interested in a profession in the health and wellness field would take exams that asked to view exercises and identify joint actions, muscles used and identify the mistakes. I am a visual learner myself and i feel that books can only do so much. Vodcasts and Podcasts are definitely going to change the nature of learning- in highschools and college levels.
